Spring Forward: Mixed Metals are Here to Stay

The latest movement in interior design for your kitchen and bathroom has much more longevity than a simple trend: mixed metals in your fixtures and fittings are here to stay.

Layering textures and tones gives depth and individuality to a space, says Interior Designer Amanda Hamilton, of Calgary’s Amanda Hamilton Design. “I’m not into following trends,” she says, “We like to be in the lead on what’s coming down the tube in terms of technology and efficiency. But at the same time, looks matter.” So she helps her clients explore what is happening in the market to find an aesthetic that will endure for the long haul.

Mixing up metals—bronzes, coppers, golds and rose golds with traditional stainless steel for the kitchen and chrome for the bathroom takes something that is popular in the market right now and makes it timeless.

“We look at lighting as the jewellery for a room,” says Hamilton. “You can mix and match metals versus cabinet hardware and the look can be not so matchy-matchy. Think of the room as the little black dress and the metals as the decorative accent that totally elevates the outfit.”

Our showroom experts at Robinson Lighting & Bath Centre can help you find mixed metals and fixtures to adorn your dream kitchen or bathroom. Whether you prefer an industrial or a Scandinavian look, a touch of mid-century retro style or modern classics, here are some timeless ideas for how to make mixed-metal details shine.

Scandivanian Cool

The Brynne Pendant comes in matte black or flat white. It features innovative LED technology by Feiss in a minimalist silhouette. And with two sets of fitters in chrome and burnished brass, you can customize your metals to your desired look.

Lee Kram, the ALA (American Lighting Association) Lighting Specialist at Robinson Lighting & Bath Centre in Calgary, says “The Brynne is one of my favourites for the kitchen or dining room, because of the two finishes. Feiss recognizes the need to offer homeowners choices of different metal fixtures against the black or white neutral finish.”

It is about creating layers, says Kram. “These details add interest and depth and set one home off from another.” The Brynne also, she says, can be used in a wide variety of room styles. “It bridges the industrial look, but is sleek enough to work with Scandinavian and modern styles.”

Available in two sizes, you can also cluster Brynne pendants together with the Feiss multiport canopy.

Mid-Century “Mad Men” Mixed Metals

The Waveform Pendant by Feiss has a retro vibe, says Kram. “There are many fixtures now based on exposing the bulb. But the vacuum-plated metal detailing of this one, in a very fashionable way, slightly conceals the bulb, so you get a little depth without the glare. The finish, it is not really ombre, but it extends on the glass and takes the look to the next level. It also comes in two sizes and two finishes. I love the generous size of the bigger one, the high ceilings you find these days can accommodate a bigger statement.”

The polished nickel finish of the Waveform is coupled with silver vacuum-plated glass; and the dual painted aged brass and dark weathered zinc version is finished with gold vacuum-plated glass. In this case, Feiss has already mixed up the metals for you.

Caged Perfection

The Nico Pendant features a well-proportioned geometric pattern of clean lines that transition into curves. The perfect point is achieved with hand-welding craftsmanship. There is drama in the scale of these pendants, and variety in the options. Available in copper, burnished brass and chrome finishes. The chain and canopy are customized to match the fixture finish.

These can be installed in clusters, with high-impact Edison bulbs for more depth and interest.
